LA BASTELLERIE: Book Art

Saturday, April 16, 2011

Once upon a time, a book in itself was a work of art. Prior to the invention of the printing press, books were produced by hand, often with intricate calligraphy and beautiful bindings. Mass production of books meant that written knowledge could become accessible to everyone, not just the elite.

A wonderful thing, but there’s something to be said for the beauty of a hand-bound, leather volume. Book fans can now learn this skill in a series of workshops put on by La Bastellerie in Kreuzberg. Class size is limited to just 5 people at a time, so sign up early to ensure a spot!
