In Antinomies: Gegensätze, Madeline Stillwell and Allison Fall’s two-person performance exhibition, they explore the discomfort that comes when we push past what we know as rational, and reach a state which transcends empirical confines. Stillwell and Fall examine the antinomies inherent in the creative process through the media of performance, collage and sculpture. Breaking out of given boundaries, be they physical, social or personal, are themes which pervade both artists’ work. Stillwell invokes the city’s viscera and vital flows with her use of found materials, creating “action paintings” with clay and urban matter during her performances. Fall works with material contrasts – combinations of chocolate and clay, of mass and fragility, of the tenacious relationship between audience and performer.

Their artistic approaches, while being distinctive, retain references in their related interests: clay and porcelain as key materials, an installative, stage-setting approach to performing, a dancer’s agility. Stillwell and Fall, drawing on their backgrounds as dancers and makers of sculpture and “sculptural graffiti”, go beyond the scope of the pre-determined White Cube, creating spaces for their performative actions, installations which are artworks in their own right.

The Antinomies: Gegensätze exhibition will feature collage, sculpture and four live performance events, the last of which will be collaborative. Ongoing actions in the sense of a “work in progress” will take place during gallery opening hours.

Through Berlin Art Link’s growing network and continued engagement with the Berlin and international art scene, Antinomies: Gegensatze was initiated in an ongoing effort to highlight Berlin’s emerging art sector.
