TAPE MODERN BERLIN NO. 24:NAVIGATING DARKNESS
Michael Krenz – “The Big Sleep” (2011), aluminum, neon lights
After an impressive run of numerous memorable exhibitions and after-parties, Tape Modern presents its twenty-fourth show, Navigating Darkness, this Friday. The curators of this one night only exhibition, Helen Homan Wu (New York) and Mira O’Brien (Berlin) utilize the black walls and nightclub setting of the venue as a starting point for an exhibition of sculptures, installations and projections which provide the only illumination of the space. The viewer travels through lightness and darkness with a heightened awareness and sensory experience.
“As one navigates through the night, the sense of sound is heightened. Like a bat relying on sonar to map space, the viewer will be coaxed by sound pieces installed throughout the exhibition. The piercing elements of sonic waves blended with the light and shadow installations will bring distortion to the viewer’s reality and cause them to turn their ears inwards. The chosen sound artists for this project, whether working with composed work, field recordings, improvisations, or live feedback are highly sensitive of the environment, and aware of both the natural and the ineffable.”
