Open Call for Artists // Berlin Art Prize 2018

Sunday, May 6, 2018

Through May 30, 2018, any artist who has been living in Berlin for a minimum of six months is invited to apply for the Berlin Art Prize 2018. The prize will award three artists with a residency in Marrakech, Morocco, prize money, and a trophy by Zuzanna Czebatul. All nominees will be included in a month-long group exhibition in Berlin-Kreuzberg opening on August 31, 2018. The winners will be announced at the midnight award ceremony on September 28, 2018.

Similarly to previous years, the Berlin Art Prize 2018 will have a jury of five artists, critics, and curators to nominate about ten artists for the prize. The first round of portfolio reviews will take place anonymously, followed by studio visits by the jury. Based on the studio visits, the jury will select the nominees to take part in the exhibition.

The confirmed 2018 jury members are: Pauline Doutreluingne (Curator), Övül Ö. Durmușoǧlu (Critic, Curator), Philipp Ekardt (Critic), Michaela Melián (Artist) and Johannes Paul Raether (Artist).

The Berlin Art Prize is the only award of its kind in Berlin and is not connected to any institution. Initiated by four cultural producers and launched in 2013, it honors contemporary art from Berlin and publicly presents it to a wider audience. Unlike other awards, here the artist’s previous exhibition history, education, and recommendations are irrelevant. The artist is evaluated anonymously by a jury of five artists, critics and curators who only take into consideration the artistic work.
