England’s Creative Coast: Open Call for Text-Based Artist or Writer

Dec. 30, 2019

England’s Creative Coast (ECC) is a large-scale arts and tourism programme across Essex, Kent and East Sussex led by Turner Contemporary, working with some of the major arts organisations in the region. As part of the Essex Local Engagement Programme, they are looking for an artist for whom text and words are a central element of their practice (for example, a visual artist who works with words and text, a writer or a poet) to work with and activate six new geocaches (hidden content found as part of a digital treasure hunt) located along the Essex coast from Southend-on-Sea to Harwich.

ECC is looking for innovative, playful and participatory ideas that ask people to actively engage with the places where the geocaches are located, connecting the stories of local Essex people with visitors and with the international commission sited in Shoeburyness.

The partnership is looking for an artist for whom working with text/writing/language/ is an integral part of their practice to devise and lead an engagement programme that will work with local people to create and animate their new geocaches. These geocaches will form a trail to encourage visitors to travel between them, forming the Essex part of the ‘GeoTour’.

No prior knowledge of geocaching is necessary – a local geocaching expert will be available to offer advice throughout the project.

The fee offered for this commission is £4,000 including VAT. Travel expenses of up to £1,000 will also be covered.
