Announcement // POPPOSITIONS Art Fair 2018

Berlin // Thursday, Apr. 5, 2018

On April 19, Poppositions “off-fair” will open for the seventh consecutive year in Brussels with a strong focus on emerging talents. Acting as a counterpoint to Art Brussels and Independent, two traditional fairs which will both happen concurrently, Poppositions encourages project spaces and artist-run initiatives to present artworks alongside galleries. Every year, Poppositions takes residence in a new location in order for participating spaces to present unique, site-specific shows, and this year is no different.

With the title ‘In Watermelon Sugar’, Poppositions 2018 will take place in the former Ateliers Coppens, a 4000-square-foot warehouse in center of Brussels’s Dansaert neighborhood. The functionalist art deco building was first built and used as a banana warehouse in 1932. In 1991, the accessories designer Christophe Coppens then took over, adding additional layers of burlesque ornamentation, until his company’s bankruptcy in 2012. Later this month, 29 independent spaces will temporarily inhabit the now abandoned space and present contextually dependent solo exhibitions.

Participating spaces include: Formato Comodo (Spain) showing Joost Krijnen, Display (Germany) showing Chloé Delarue, Kunsthalle Tropical (Switzerland ad Iceland) showing Mars Alive, Podium Oslo (Norway) showing Miriam Hansen, Loft Project Etagi (Russia) showing Johanna Van Overmeir, Vitrine (UK) showing Charlie Godet Thomas, and Ventilator (Israel) showing Ishai Shapira Kalter, among many others. Despite Poppositions’s mission to be the antithesis of an art fair, however, one thing can be certain: everything will still be for sale.
