Rirkrit Tiravanija’s ‘Set, Scenario, Situation’ at Walther König Buchhandlung

May 21, 2018

Since the early 1990s, Rirkrit Tiravanija has explored the reality of the every day, creating works that explore themes of eating, drinking and conversing as well as making music, reading and relaxing. Tiravanija frames these true-to-life activities not only through sets but also with exhibitions, always asking us to consider our ways of being.

‘Set, Scenario, Situation’ is the first comprehensive art historical analysis of Tiravanija’s collected works, specifically exploring those made during the period of 1987–2005. The book launch will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, May 22, at Walther König Buchhandlung and will include a talk with author Jörn Schafaff.

The title of the book references works from both the early 20th century (Marcel Duchamp, Friedrich Kiesler) as well as the contemporary, focusing in detail on the history of installation and environmental art. The first part of the book is devoted to the introduction of the three leading concepts in Tiravanija’s work: situation, set, and scenario. The second part focuses on closer readings of individual works. The third and final part centers around the series of retrospectives from 2004 to 2005 in which Tiravanija reflected on his former body of work.
