Anticipating Berlin Art Week 2018

Aug. 23, 2018

In just over a month, Berlin Art Week will commence with a program that includes 20 project spaces, 15 museums and exhibition spaces, 11 private collections, two Kunstvereine, two art fairs and one theater. Both the second edition of art berlin and the fifth edition of Positions Berlin Art Fair will take place at the former Tempelhof Airport from September 27–30. Aside from the fairs, Berlin Art Link is particularly looking forward to the solo exhibitions of Agnieszka Polska at Hamburger Bahnhof, Lee Bul at Gropius Bau, Julian Charriére at Berlinische Galerie, Evelyn Taocheng Wang at KW Institute for Contemporary Art and Lawrence Abu Hamdan at daadgalerie, as well as group exhibitions like ‘The Most Dangerous Game’ at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) and ‘Touch’ at neue Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst (nGbK).

Polska’s anticipated show comes after having received last year’s Preis der Nationalgalerie and will feature a new multi-channel video installation, while Bul’s survey, entitled ‘Crash,’ will mark the Korean artist’s inaugural exhibition in Germany. Charriére will present a multimedia spatial installation that brings viewers underwater in the Pacific Ocean and, at Berghain for one night only, he and Inland will present An Invitation to Disappear, an “audio-visual excursion into the dystopian and paradisiacal landscape of a palm oil plantation.” Wang is set to premiere two films alongside an installation of large-scale fabric works. Similarly, Abu Hamdan has created a new video, Walled Unwalled (2018), which will debut during the week’s many festivities.

For the first year in its history, Berlin Art Week coincides with the Opening Days of the European Month of Photography, so there will be a special emphasis on image-based exhibitions. C/O Berlin will present ‘Back to the Future,’ merging technologies of the past with those of the present and the future by showcasing artists like Anna Atkins, Karl Blossfelt, Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs and Matthew Brandt, while ‘Routinised Absurdity’ at KINDL – Centre for Contemporary Art will feature 10 international artists currently working with the medium, such as Louis de Belle, Brooke DiDonato, Sebastian Stumpf and Elisa Larvego. me Collectors Room will also present a wide-ranging exhibition dedicated to masters of photography from the Olbricht Collection, including works by Diane Arbus, August Sander, Tina Barney, Larry Clark, Cindy Sherman, Lee Friedlander, Gerhard Richter, Juergen Teller and Helmut Newton, among many others.

Outside of the white cubes and airplane hangars, the city itself will also be transformed by public projects and events. Launching a new segment of the Berliner Festspiele’s Immersion program, a mobile full-dome system—akin to a temporary planetarium—will appear on Mariannenplatz and host a multiplayer adaptation of David OReilly’s philosophical videogame Everything. In addition to ‘Touch,’ nGbK will also present an exhibition of artistic posters in the Alexanderplatz U-Bahn station under the title ‘Posters made political.’

Other highlights include: the announcement of the recipient of this year’s Berlin Art Prize at midnight on September 28; Martin Parr’s artist’s talk at C/O Berlin on September 29; guided tours of Adrien Piper’s exhibition at Akademie der Künste; and choreographer Meg Stuart and her company Damaged Good’s performance Projecting [Space[ at Reinbeckhallen in Oberschöneweide.
