Highlights from Art Basel 2019

by Anna Russ // June 15, 2019

This week the international art world has descended upon Basel for numerous fairs and concurrent projects. It should go without saying that the largest of these endeavors is Art Basel itself, which is divided into eight exhibition sectors: Galleries, Feature, Statements, Edition, Unlimited, Parcours, Film and Magazines. In Galleries, you find booths occupied by blue-chip names like Gagosian and Gladstone, while Statements presents solo exhibitions by younger artists, this year including Nancy Halt, Ad Minoliti, and Alvaro Urbano, among others. Unlimited invites galleries to go beyond their booths, offering space for large-scale installations, massive sculptures, video projections and performances. Meanwhile, Parcours is where Art Basel leaves the fairgrounds and enters the city, showing works in public spaces and Basel institutions. For example, Rinus Van de Velde has an installation at the Bau- and Verkehrsdepartement and Dan Graham’s sculpture Dancing Circles is on view outside at Münsterplatz. At the Messeplatz in a specially designed tent, the Romanian artist and choreographer Alexandra Pirici presents a new installation of her work ‘Aggregate’ including more than 60 performers.

The events that have happened thus far and that are continuing to happen this weekend are too many to count, so rather than provide an in-depth analysis in words, we chose to photograph some of our favorite moments. Scroll down for an insider’s view of the projects and people at Art Basel.
