Majhi International Art Residency Program and Exhibition 2020 to Take Place in Berlin

Aug. 14, 2020

This year, Durjoy Bangladesh Foundation (DBF) will host the second edition of the Majhi International Art Residency Program in Berlin between August 24th and September 12th. The Berlin edition of the Majhi residency is the second in a series of brief artistic residencies, which DBF plans to initiate annually over a ten year period. The first edition was curated by Caterina Corni and held in 2019 in Venice at the same time as the Venice Art Biennale. Conceived by curator Zippora Elders, this year’s iteration of the program asks seven international artists to reflect on the question: “How to shape a society of care? On kinship and multiple homes.”

This year’s participating artists—Orawan Arunrak (Thailand/Germany), Johannes Büttner (Germany/Netherlands), Omar Chowdhury (Bangladesh/Australia), Rajkamal Kahlon (USA), Belle Phromchanya (Thailand/Netherlands), Bussaraporn Thongchai (Thailand/Germany) and Umut Yasat (Germany/Turkey)—come from diverse backgrounds and will converge in Berlin to share their insights on the future and kinship in the context of having multiple homes and knowledge systems while pursuing a practice from Europe.

Beginning on August 24th, the artists will bring together their work and initiate conversations around this proposed curatorial theme, with periodic discussion rounds between the curator and artists, as well as guest participants, such as
the artists Willem de Rooij and Tonny Nowshin. Further invitees are Melanie Bonajo, Nguyễn + Transitory and the collective Soy Division. Conversations will revolve around processes of decolonization in institutions, sharing crafts and food between communities, future technology and care, and integrating climate activism in art practices.

During Gallery Weekend and Berlin Art Week, residency participants will offer a public presentation and closing exhibition. The public program, taking place at Der Bogen in Mitte with consideration of Covid restrictions, will also include performances and artists talks by three of the discussion-round guests, Nguyễn + Transitory, Tonny Nowshin and Soy Division.
