Announcement // Berlin Art Week Kicks Off September 16

On September 16-21, the city’s pulse will rise as visitors and denizens move between the various art events, performances, openings, exhibits, and discussions of Berlin Art Week. For the third time, Berlin Art Week has gathered art fairs – abc (art berlin contemporary) and Positions (a reincarnation of the Preview Berlin Art Fair) – along with the major galleries of the city, renowned institutions, and carefully selected alternative arts projects. One of the new program features this year will also be an international conference Artfi – The Fine Art & Finance Conference.

The grand opening will kick off the busy week on Sept. 16, 2014, at 7 pm at the Akademie der Kunste. During the opening, guests will be able to view one of the major highlight exhibits of the month (maybe year), “Schwindel der Wirklichkeit / Vertigo of Reality,” featuring a slew of international art stars including Marina Abramović, Thomas Demand, Olafur Eliasson, Harun Farocki, and Bill Viola (just to name few), as well as an open-air concert featuring several bands, events at the Metabolic Office for the Repair of Reality, and a performance piece by Christian Falsnaes. Admission to the opening night is free.

A 6-day ticket for the galleries and art fairs can be purchased for 30 EUR/22 EUR reduced, or a 2-day ticket for 20 EUR/15 EUR reduced, which allows entrance to all Berlin Art Week projects.

During this week, the exhibits of Berlin’s major galleries are included with the admission. In addition the different institutions are organizing various events, performances, and talks, a schedule of which can be found here.

This year, the Berlin Art Week jury has selected 9 exemplary alternative art spaces and projects from 50 international proposals, including: Archive Kabinett, die raum, DISTRICT, Import Projects, Kinderhook & Caracas, L’oiseau présente, OZEAN, Scriptings, and team titanic. The judges’ criteria privileged diverse approaches that challenge the conventions and structures of the art market. An overview and a schedule of the temporary partners can be found here.

This city’s largest art fair, abc – art berlin contemporary will run from Sept. 18 – 21, 2014, from noon till 7pm. It opens with a barbecue on Sept. 18, from 4-9 pm. abc Gallery Nights will be on Sept. 17, 2014, from 7-10 in abc galleries in Kreuzberg and Mitte, and on Sept. 19, 2014, from 7-10pm in Schöneberg and Charlottenburg. Positions art fair, organized by Kristian Jarmuschek, previously Co-Director of the self-proclaimed “Emerging Art Fair” of Berlin, PREVIEW BERLIN, will collect over 50 emerging and established, multi-national talents in a curious architectural and spatial montage at the Kaufhaus Jandorf from Sept. 18-21, 2014. Positions will host its opening reception on Sep. 18 from 6-10pm. The positions schedule can be found here.
