‘In the Pictorial Space of the Real’ (Im Bildraum der Wirklichkeit) is a curated archive of work by Sinta Werner exploring architecture, image and colour theory. Her site-specific and material-specific works reveal a consistent interest in displacing the balance of objects and 3D structures through the use of collage, built constructions, and illusory practices. In black and white photographs and simulated mirrors, Werner asks audiences to become one with their environment and consider a complex relationship between sight and self. From her first place prize in the Meindlschule in Munich to Berlin’s very own Galerie Alexander Levy, Werner’s ability to combine Brutalist structures with visual indicators of carefully curated engineering is testament to her design and craft skills.

In addition to her work, the book carefully interjects interviews, texts and excerpts to distort as well as inform the sentiments behind her practice. Through peepholes of art history and contemporary criticism, Werner ultimately explores theories of visibility by reflecting on the possibility of multiple perspectives. Published by Kerber Verlag, simultaneously in German and English, the card-bound monograph is the first extensive look into the artist’s work with texts by Ludwig Seyfarth and Anne van Leeuwen and a conversation with Andreas Koch.
