The Berlin Film Society is celebrating its 5th birthday and the opening of Berlinale with a special screening of F. W. Murnau’s 1927 film, ‘Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans’. On the 9th of February 2017, former silent cinema Delphi, will open its doors to screen the three-time academy award winning film.

With roots in the German Expressionist movement, ‘Sunrise’ follows a story of corruption and redemption in a rural town. An illicit love affair between a farmer and a young woman push both lovers to live a life of temptation in a god-forsaken city.

Produced over 90 years ago, this bold visual was the first feature to incorporate sound using the Fox movietone system. With an additional musical score by Hugo Riesenfeld, the fable-like story is garnered as one of the standout pieces of the silent-film era.

Situated on Caligariplatz, the Delphi was among the finest and most popular cinemas in Berlin’s former cultural hotspot, Weißensee. Once regarded as ‘Little Hollywood’, the cinema became a staple in popularising the German artistic movement, hosting guests such as Marlene Dietrich and Fritz Lang. Today, the building remains a forgotten treasure to many Berliners.
