The Austrian Federal Ministry for Housing, Arts, Culture, Media and Sport – Division Arts and Culture in cooperation with the MAK – Austrian Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna will be awarding a total of six residency scholarships at the Mackey Apartments, Los Angeles taking place in 2026/27. The program focuses on innovations in art and architecture, foregrounding interdisciplinary approaches and the connections between Vienna and Los Angeles that have existed in this shape since 1995.
In an effort to both preserve and promote R. M. Schindler’s vision and influence, the Scholarship Program seeks to create new confrontations through talks, symposia and lectures while also supporting young artists, architects and students in the long term. By cooperating with universities, artists and architects, participants are placed at the center of the program and afforded a space to shape discourse surrounding experimentation at the borderline of art and architecture, culminating in exhibitions at the end of their term.
Each group will be made up of two artists and one architect, with the first scholarship to take place from April 7th to September 29th, 2026 and the second from October 12th, 2026 to March 23rd, 2027. Recipients of the MAK Schindler Scholarship for the Artists and Architects-in-Residence Program at Schindler’s Mackey Apartments will receive 1500 USD per month for the six-month residency as well as travel expenses of up to 1300 USD.
The scholarship is open to freelance artists, fine arts or architecture students who have either completed the “2. Studienabschnitt” or recently graduated. Teams of up to three persons who practice together as an artist group or as a collective of architects are also welcome to apply. Selected applicants will be announced during an international jury meeting taking place on September 22nd, 2025.
