Tadashi Kawamata x Ruinart at PalaisPopulaire During Gallery Weekend

Apr. 13, 2026

From April 30th to May 3rd, the champagne house Ruinart will open a special venue for art and enjoyment at the historic PalaisPopulaire during Gallery Weekend Berlin: the Ruinart Champagne & Art Bar. For this occasion, Ruinart will showcase its collaboration with the Japanese artist Tadashi Kawamata.

Since 2008, Ruinart has invited internationally renowned artists to artistically interpret the Maison. This year, Kawamata has been given the opportunity to visualize his own interpretation with his site-specific installation, as part of the ongoing series ‘Conversations with Nature,’ which invites artists to restore a conscious connection to the natural world.

Born in 1953 in Hokkaidō, Japan, Tadashi Kawamata now lives and works in Tokyo and Paris. In his practice, he explores the relationship between art, architecture, design and everyday life, highlighting the environmental impact of reusing materials. He is known for his in-situ installations made of wood and furniture, through which the artist questions our attachment to the permanence of things—a permanence that is constantly challenged by the forces of nature.

Kawamata’s site-specific installations respond closely to their surroundings, whether natural, urban or architectural. Using wood and recycled materials, he builds delicate, immersive structures that encourage new perspectives on space and landscape. His creative process is rooted in careful observation of elements like light, air and vegetation, developed through drawings and models before large-scale execution. Kawamata’s work invites viewers to reconsider their relationship with the environment and attune to nature’s subtle rhythms.

The installation, created exclusively for Ruinart, is a highlight of Berlin’s Gallery Weekend, which will form the centerpiece of the Ruinart Art Gallery, where visitors can also experience sustainability-inspired food pairings with the house’s premium champagnes. Guests can also book exclusive tastings with sommelier Pierre Girard.

In May, Kawamata will present further in-situ installations for Ruinart at the historic 4 Rue des Crayères site in Reims. Additional installations by Kawamata for Ruinart will be on view this year at art fairs such as Frieze London, Art Basel Paris, Tokyo Art and Art Basel Miami.
