In the new year, the second edition of the Dhaka Art Summit, hosted by the Samdani Art Foundation, will present the works of over 250 South Asian and international artists in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The non-commercial event focuses on contemporary art from several South Asian countries including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, the Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Directors Diana Campbell Betancourt (Artistic Director, Samdani Art Foundation) and Mahbubur Rahman (Artist /Co-Founder, Britto Arts Trust, Bangladesh) have put together a programme of curated exhibitions and talks that will explore global and regional perspectives on South Asian art practices.

The Dhaka Art Summit will present solo projects by numerous acclaimed artists, including Lida Abdul, Rana Begum, Rathin Barman, Shilpa Gupta, Runa Islam, Jitish Kallat, Tayeba Begum Lipi, Naeem Mohaiemen, Mahbubur Rahman, Rashid Rana, Mithu Sen, Tsherin Sherpa, Shahzia Sikander and Asim Waqif. A series of talks will also be given by international curators, collectors and theorists as part of the Summit, alongside an impressive number of performances and experimental film screenings on offer.

The festival will host a public art initiative Meanwhile Elsewhere by Raqs Media Collective, and curated by Diana Campbell Betancourt. The ongoing project will transform 160 road signs and billboards across the city of Dhaka using faces of clocks and the Bengali language. The project will be launched at the Dhaka Art Summit and will continue to be on view during Bangladesh’s International Mother Language Day on 21 February 2014.

The Samdani Foundation will also present an Art Award, accompanied by an exhibition showcasing the works of shortlisted artists selected by a respected jury panel, including Aaron Cezar (Founding Director, The Delfina Foundation), Jessica Morgan (Curator, Tate Modern and Artistic Director of the 2014 Gwangju Biennale), Adriano Pedrosa (Independent curator, editor and writer), Sandhini Poddar (Associate curator, Asian art, Guggenheim Museum) and Pooja Sood (Director, Khoj International Artists’ Association).
