Open Call // Bauhaus Dessau Residency 2017

Article by Caitlin Eyre in Berlin // Monday, Jul. 11, 2016

To celebrate nearly 100 years since its foundation, Bauhaus Dessau is offering international artists a three month living and working residency at their Muche/Schlemmer duplex Master house. The residency is available to two artists who would like to undertake a project that relates to Bauhaus and which preferably references the foundation’s topic for 2017, ‘substance’. Artists who have a strong interest in the Bauhaus and who work in areas that are historically represented by the Bauhaus (such as painting, product design, textile design, music, performing arts, architecture and photography) are encouraged to apply.

In the 1920s, the Master’s Houses in Dessau became the centre of the Bauhaus artist community and were home to key artists within the movement, including Walter Gropius, Oskar Schlemmer, Georg Muche, László Moholy-Nagy, Lyonel Feininger, Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. The site gave rise to a rich and dynamic network of artistic relationships and contributions, with all members working together in the open structure of the model homes built on the parklands located there. The Master’s Houses became deserted in 1933 after the departure of the Bauhaus artists and their families, effectively ending the artistic function of the site.

The Bauhaus Dessau residency aims to revitalise the Master’s House complex by giving young international artists the opportunity to create artwork and make artistic connections on the site once more. The artwork created during the residency will be displayed onsite in the Gropius House until the Bauhaus anniversary in 2019.

For three months in 2017, the two recipients of the residency will receive:

* Living and work space in the Muche/Schlemmer House
* A monthly expense allowance of 1,200 euros
* Opportunities to give presentations and performances during the residency period
* Support in research and organising events
* Technical assistance and public relations activities
* Public presentation of their work in Gropius House at the conclusion of the residency

The deadline for applications is Monday, September 5, 2016.
