Virtual Reality // ‘Electrification: Objects and Sound Installations’ by ::vtol:: at HAU 2

As part of the ‘Utopian Realities – 100 Years of Now with Alexandra Kollontai’ Festival, HAU2 (Hebbel am Ufer) presents a seven-object installation by the media artist ::vtol::, alias for Moscow-born Dmitry Morozov. Describing his work as ‘technological art’, Morozov opens up a world of abstract fantasy, found objects and cybernetic creatures to create a fascinating, constructed utopia in which robotic and cyber creatures live and act independently.

Across three floors, a series of stand-alone mechanics use sound, modular synthesizers and kinetic energy to output audio-visual data. The project, which oversees developments in wi-fi, telecommunications and viewer participation, stemmed from everyday living situations that Morozov took inspiration from to correct, modify or satirise: mechanical birds that communicate with each other through sound feedback, micro-devices that distribute wi-fi networks as poem stanzas and even a machine that prank calls landline numbers with sound algorithms. ‘Electrification’ hones in on the world of undetectable, repetitive sequences acting on behalf of the encrypted technological world.

Morozov has ingeniously exposed viewers to a comical yet chilling virtual world, in which robots and machines have the ability to perform and communicate with each other without the need for constant maintenance. The combination of mathematics, physics and design has resulted in a world of virtual intelligence undetectable to the human eye.
