Christo is an environmental sculptor who is noted for his controversial outdoor pieces that force observers to confront questions regarding the nature of art. He is famous for strikingly visual works in which he often wraps or covers buildings, places of public interest and landscapes. The majority of his artworks have been created through collaboration with his now deceased partner, Jeanne-Claude. He considers himself to be a “pure” artist, refusing all sponsorship and corporate money and instead raises the funds needed for his installations by selling sketches, designs and models of his proposed projects.

‘Floating Peers’ documents the project that he completed in 2016, 200km west of Venice. The installation comprised 70,000 square meters of yellow fabric, which was laid over a modular floating dock system consisting of 220,000 highly-compressed polyethylene cubes to temporarily form a 3km stretch over the surface of Lake Iseo, the mainland between the islands of Monte Isola and San Paolo. Throughout the duration of the installation, tens of thousands of people were able to walk on the water. The book shows Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s sketches, models, and documents ranging from approval procedures to fabric production and presents the complete history of the technical effort of the project.

Twenty-two years after the completion of the covering of the Reichstag, the book ‘Wrapped Reichstag’ presents the twenty-four year artistic process of the project. Christo and Jeanne-Claude spent years of technical preparation for covering the building in 100,000 square meters of polypropylene fabric and 15,600 meters of blue polypropylene, emphasizing the essence of the Reichstag building. The design was the first work of art that the German elected parliament had to discuss and vote on and by the end of the project 5 million people had visited the duo’s piece. This book is a documentation of the history of this work and shows numerous original documents, drawings, collages, large photographs and the original covering materials.

The Taschen store is currently offering copies of a limited and signed edition of the ‘Wrapped Reichstag’ book, the regular edition of the book as well as the regular edition of ‘Floating Piers’.

Berlin Art Link is holding a raffle for the event and one winner will receive a signed edition of the ‘Floating Piers’ book. To be entered into the raffle, readers should visit our Facebook page and like and share the post as well as tag a friend.
