Fables and Form: David Alexander Flinn at Envoy Enterprises NYC

On view through November at Envoy Enterprises is the elegant work of David Alexander Flinn. Nor Here Nor There displays a cross section of sculptural musings on the way morals are shaped through fantastical narratives we’re all exposed to as youths, and how they come to guide us as adults. Focusing on primordial instincts, David investigated the idealism inherent in folklore. These iconically charged objects from childhood stories mark the beginning of a timeline that will develop as an individual’s life would, with the addition of future works. In this first life chapter, stories like The Sword in the Stone are examined in favor of the blue collar worker, or really, any individual without unrealistic expectations. The handle of Excalibur is missing, leaving a raw blade in the cement center piece of the show. Seeing how deeply embedded in cement this sword is, and what a bloody struggle it would be to extricate it, drains the narrative of illusion. What’s left standing is the prosaic moral that hard work and perseverance will get you the prize.

In David’s upcoming show at the Italian Institute this spring, these same themes will be explored through a macro lens, where drawings of crystalline compositions come to represent intersections in an individual’s life. Each intersection marks a point when the reading of morals, and the choices one makes can lead you down divergent paths.
