Out of Line: Exercises in Seeing and Drawing – drawing workshop with Romeo Alaeff

During September and October you have the chance to learn the art of drawing in a non-classical approach. Berlin Collective will organize a drawing workshop in collaboration with artist and instructor Romeo Alaeff.

The goal of the workshop is to overcome the clichés and problems normally associated with drawing. Alaeff will therefore focus on how you actually translate the things you see on to paper. The workshop will be 5 or 6 classes as a total (depending on what month you chose), and will overlap different techniques with pens, pencils, brush, ink and paper. The workshop also focuses on narrative drawing, modern technology and drawing tools such as Photoshop and iPad apps, photos, cameras, ipads, tablets, light tables, grid systems, and projectors. And who says paper is the only way to go when it comes to drawing? In these classes you can learn more about output variations such as websites, journals, comupter prints, books, animation, street art, blogs etc.

Romeo Alaeff is originally from USA but now lives and works in Berlin. He has an MFA from Rhode Island School of Design and has exhibited worldwide at various museums and galleries, such as International Print Center (New York), the Dallas Museum of Art, The Chelsea Art Museum, and the New York and Lyon Biennale. Alaeff has also been a guest teacher and instructor at a number of institutions such as Parsons School of Design (The New School), Pratt Institute, New York and Rhode Island School of Design. Alaeff was recently featured in the book “Stuck Up Piece of Crap” (Rizzoli, 2010), and most recently authored “I’ll be Dead by the Time You Read This” (Penguin Books, 2011), a book with drawings of animal charachters accompanied with short texts. The texts are written with Romeo’s trademark tongue-in-cheek sense of humor and explore the sadness, humor and absurdity of the self-deprecating feelings and thoughts that most humans have in everyday life.
