Article by Beatrix Joyce in Berlin // Saturday, Dec. 24, 2016

With the fifth edition of the Amsterdam Light Festival, taking place this month and next, the streets of Amsterdam become even brighter than usual. The city—known for its canals, waterfronts and traditional Dutch townhouses—is illuminated with the installation of over 35 artworks by a selection of artists, architects and designers. The annual light art festival presents the rapidly developing trends of light art in exciting new ways.

Amsterdam Light Festival is currently accepting proposals for its sixth edition, due to take place from November 30th, 2017 to January 21st, 2018. From artists to designers, engineers to architects, and professionals to students, the festival invites creators from around the world to submit their creative interpretations of the theme ‘Existential’.

Replicating this year’s design, there will be two exhibitions following two routes in Amsterdam’s city centre, each with its own unique interpretation of the festival’s theme. The ‘Water Colours’ boat route, taking place along the canals, seeks to connect the essential elements of light with the visitors’ awareness of their existential being. Proposals for works that are on, above or in the water will therefore be the main focus. The ‘Illuminade’ walking route seeks to bring the existential qualities of light back to basics and provide a stage for tangible artworks. Artworks that you can touch, walk through and interact will thus be given priority.
