These residencies are aimed at artists and theoreticians working in the field of contemporary art in the EU and its associated countries. It will provide artists with the opportunity to live and work in Karlsruhe, Tallinn, or Tirana for a period of two months. Beyond Matter would like to stress that all artists and theoreticians with various artistic and theoretical interests are invited to apply, not only cultural producers who work in the field of virtual media. Project proposals developed with the locality of the residency in mind will be prioritised.

Artists and theoreticians who participate in these residencies will develop an artistic production or theoretical concept that focuses on the core questions of the Beyond Matter project. Applicants are invited to consider the artistic and theoretical applications of virtual reality tools and digitisation with the aim of offering possible suggestions of how artistic practices using virtual reality contribute to current political and social discourses, among other questions.

Each residency is fully funded and includes travel, accommodation, a stipend, and production costs. Over the two-month stay, each location offers its residents various resources and opportunities. The Hertz-Lab of the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe offers wood, metal, and electrical workshops, a dark projection room, set-up areas for larger installations, a green screen studio, a sound studio with multichannel audio projection, and a volumetric capturing system available by appointment. The Tallinn Art Hall allows residents the opportunity to hold workshops, sessions, and seminars related to the overall themes of the project; in particular on the challenges with the latest XR applications, networking opportunities, research support, and support for regional travel. The Tirana Art Lab offers research and production of artworks engaging with the overall themes of the project and involving public space and interventions in public space relating to the city of Tirana using Extended Reality technologies.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic the physical stay during the residency period may be postponed. In response, the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe are offering the possibility of applying with an online project that does not have to be implemented on site, and will be hosted via virtual exhibition platform.
