Open Call for Berlin Project Space Festival 2024

Feb. 13, 2024

The Project Space Festival—founded in 2014 to make the diversity of Berlin’s project space scene visible—focuses on the independence, resilience and impact of the local art scenes. Against the backdrop of current political events, which increasingly raise questions about the limits of artistic and curatorial practices and challenge institutions, the 10th year of the festival currently offers an opportunity to reflect on the importance and aesthetics of local artistic spaces for the cultural resilience of our societies.

All project spaces and initiatives in Berlin are invited to apply for the eighth edition of the Project Space Festival. From June 1st to 30th, 2024, the Project Space Festival invites you to visit 30 events of the independent project space scene in Berlin. With a month-long program, the festival provides a comprehensive insight into the city’s artistic, collaborative spaces.

Each of the 29 selected project spaces or initiatives will have a maximum of 24 hours to present an event (exhibition/performance/reading/screening, etc.) either in their own space, in public space or in another space of their choice. It is possible to submit an exhibition that is already planned and of longer duration, but in that case the opening must take place within the Project Space Festival’s time frame.

It is important to note that only independent, non-commercial artistic project spaces and initiatives can be considered for the application. In addition, all events within the Project Space Festival must be open to the public and free of charge. All Project Space Festival events will be documented photographically by the festival. All participating project spaces / initiatives agree to this.

From the applications submitted, a jury will select 29 project spaces / initiatives at the beginning of March. The members of the jury are or were running a project space and have already participated in the Project Space Festival in the past. The members of the jury are: Benjamin Busch (The Institute for Endotic Research | PSF 2019), Aiko Okamoto (TOKONOMA |PSF 2016), Nadim Samman (Import Projects | PSF 2014, 2015), Jorgina Stamogianni (centrum| PSF 2022), Antje Weitzel (uqbar | PSF 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2022).

Fees per space/initiative: up to 4 exhibition fees at €300 gross (The fees cannot be spent as a total budget, but are always linked to the participation of artists and are paid directly to them); up to 2 organizational fees at €300 gross (operators of the project space / initiative. The fees cannot be spent as a total budget and are always tied to the operators of the project space / initiative); and a production budget of €300 (this budget will be added to one of the organizational fees and distributed as a fee).

The Project Space Festival 2024 is funded by the Hauptstadtkulturfonds.
