Screenings and Artist Talk: Christa Joo Hyun D’Angelo’s ‘Past, Present, Tense’

by Judith Vallette // Aug. 6, 2020

In an upcoming screening of her film ‘Past, Present, Tense’ (2015) and artist talk, Christa Joo Hyun D’Angelo will facilitate discussions surrounding the colonial history and white supremacy constitutive of German identity. D’Angelo, a multidisciplinary artist, will screen her video work at Ashley Berlin from August 24th to 27th, culminating in an artist talk on Thursday, August 27th at 7:30pm. D’Angelo’s works deal with narratives of marginalization that are often made invisible. Her videos aim to promote healing and this particular piece examines racism in Germany through a selection of interviews that highlight Germans with minority descent, who discuss their often unwitnessed experiences with the public. The film is composed of dialogues surrounding meanings of identity throughout the country’s numerous ongoing social and political transitions, ranging from the time of the GDR to contemporary situations.

Through these interviews, D’Angelo provides the audience with glimpses into unique personal experiences. The audience is encouraged to reflect on the precarious situation of marginalized groups in the context of a white post-colonial Europe. D’Angelo calls to attention the responsibilities inherent in being a white German within this very racist history. Viewers are urged to question how we deal with colonial pasts, as the artist provokes uncomfortable memories and emotions.

The goal of this work is to urge audiences to consider ways in which they subconsciously contribute to the continuation of racism, and how they can work toward further change and development within themselves and their environment. Creating dialogues about different experiences under white supremacy is crucial to instigating such change. These interviews push us to think about and relearn perceptions of identity and intersecting dynamics of class, race and privilege.

For those unable to attend in person, the film will also be available to stream via Ashley’s website throughout the week and the artist talk will be live-streamed. Attendees for the live screenings and talk at Ashley are required to wear a mask at all times.
