The Good Life in Berlin

Pergamon by Barbara Confino

Blog post by Barbara Confino – in New York; Saturday, Aug. 04, 2012.

From the beginning Berlin confounds me. My first impression of this city built on a swamp is dreary. I find most of its famous old buildings disproportionally massive, its wide avenues tacky and commercial, and am thinking this is an ugly city when I discover something else. Having gone to the Museum of Natural History to pay my respects to the dinosaurs, I chance upon a photography exhibit detailing the variety of wildlife… [read on…]

Spreepark Project Falls Short of Expectations

Kulturpark

Blog post by Alison Hugill – in Berlin; Friday, August 3, 2012.

The ruins of Spreepark are fascinating and haunting palimpsests of the utopian promises of Soviet-era urbanism. Located along the Spree River, the amusement park was first opened in 1969 as Kulturpark Plänterwald, the only permanent entertainment park in the GDR. After the Wall fell, it was sold, given a ‘western’ makeover… [read on…]

Blog post by Adela Yawitz – in Berlin; Monday, Jul. 16, 2012.

In his new exhibition at Isabella Czarnowska gallery, painter Luc Tuymans plays the curator, art historian, and co-star of the show. The collection of paintings and objects in the gallery pushes the boundaries of visual, linear lines that tie the “influential” to the “influenced”. Tuymans, one of the most prominent painters working today, presents an exhibition of his own work alongside the work of Paul Thek…[read on…]

Karla Black at Schinkel Pavillon

Karla Black at Schinkel Pavillon

Blog post by Marie-Louise Crona – in Berlin; Friday, Jul. 13, 2012.

The Schinkel Pavillon was built in 1969 by the architect Rikard Paulick and is located at the park of the Crown Prince’s Palace. Schinkel Pavillon gives the impression of being an oversized vitrine, and standing inside it, there are great panoramic views of famous Berlin monuments like the TV Tower, the former School of Architecture of Karl Friedrich Schinkel, and the Berliner Dom.
